Greg Cohen has been the bass player in John Zorn's Masada for the past five years and is one of the most impressive of the current bassists. He produced, arranged and played bass on the acclaimed and best-selling 1996 album by Madeleine Peyroux, and has served as musical director to Tom Waits over the past decade. He has a great sense of the past and how to best utilize it to create new music.
Here he has assembled a group of some of the very best musicians now working, including the ubiquitous Dave Douglas on trumpet and the multi-talented reedman, Scott Robinson. The band plays six of Cohen's colorful originals plus two Ellington tunes - Way Low, from 1919 and Creole Rhapsody from 1931 - and Bud Powell's So Sorry, Please for piano, bass and drums.

The band originally also included Monk's great saxophonist Charlie Rouse. The new album includes beautiful tunes written to reflect the feeling of the original group but also to demonstrate Chancey's smart and sensitive music, as well as a cover of Julius Watkins Linda Delia, a repertoire of the original group. Next Mode is a thoughtful and deeply felt production.

Michael Weiss is yet another underrated and relatively unknown piano player in New York. This is a superb and sublime album, which is greatly enhanced by the virtuosity of Eric Alexander's powerful tenor. Weiss played for 10 years with Johnny Griffin and has mastered the art of mixing with a strong horn. To his credit, Weiss really lets Alexander dominate the album. Weiss's playing is linked to the great bop masters, like Bud Powell, and when he solos the piano sings. It is too bad that he has not put out an album in more than 10 years. This album is a must-have for the Summer and is well worth the extra dollars as an import. You will not be able to take it off your CD player!

This is the only sound source of the phantom saxophonist / guitarist / pianist who died in 1989 at the age of 31 is found. In the unpublicized live recordings included in this work, his overwhelming play of blowing the tenor sax energetically just like Coltrane is caught up!
Not too many people outside New York probably ever heard (or even heard of) Arthur Rhames but the young tenor saxophonist who died of AIDS in 1989 sure seemed to be someone special to those who did. The liner notes are packed with eulogies, from graybeard vets John Stubblefield and Reggie Workman to youngblood Brooklyn peers Vernon Reid, Melvin Gibbs and Wallace Roney!
He apparently practiced 18 hours a day (split between tenor, piano and guitar) and that dedication and intensity apparently made him a major inspiration to his musician peers. He stayed in the closet from fear of having his ‘hood and musician friends shun him but Reid credits finding out that Rhames was gay as the beginning of the end of his homophobia. That says a lot about the effect Arthur Rhames had as a person but still leaves his mark as a musician in the realm of what might have been!

Although pianist James Williams is the nominal leader of this CD and there is also room for many concise solos from Billy Pierce (mostly on tenor), vibraphonist Steve Nelson and the remarkable bassist Christian McBride, the star throughout is actually flugelhornist Clark Terry. 72 at the time but showing no sign of decline, Terry contributed three of the numbers, sings in his famous Mumbles voice on two humorous pieces (including a preacher routine on "The Orator") and plays quite well throughout. Highpoints of this straightahead session include the boppish "Serenade to a Bus Seat," the uptempo blues "Chuckles" and Terry's spectacular solo on "Moonglow."

I recall John Zorn mentioning how much he dug Marie’s lovely arrangement of "I Say a Little Prayer" on his Bacharach tribute cd of last year and that he had asked her to do an entire release of Bacharach tunes. Well here it is & what a luscious work of art it surely is. This cd features more of Marie’s excellent arrangements and warm, lyrical playing of her superb ensemble. Elegant, enchanting and even haunting at times, Marie’s musicians lift these tunes to a higher plane, especially the ever-melodic tone & grace of Rob Henke on trumpet & flugelhorn and Rich Perry on tenor sax. Marie constantly captures the elegant/innocent spirit of the 60’s when these songs were pop hits, occasionally opening them up to unexpected directions. "In the Land of Make Believe" opens with a slow, lovely tenor bit before it erupts into a burning, super quick tempo rush, but then slows again with more delicious tenor sounds. It is long & winding version of "The Look of Love" that is this release’s real gem! A marvelous arrangement of shifting tempos and textures, mysterious Coltrane-like episode for the tenor, and amazing horns only sections. Certainly the most gorgeous release on Avant, Zorn was right once more. Marie’s fine, slightly psychedelic b&w artwork adorn the cover and show another of her talents.

You will never hear Beethoven and Liszt the same way again. "Drury is an amazing pianist of modern classical music, a champion & friend of John Zorn and a professor at New England Conservatory. After appearing on numerous releases of Zorn's classical compositions, this is Drury's first solo cd for Avant. He has carefully chosen works by Stockhausen, Ives, Liszt & Beethoven, a restless spirit and certain noted themes bind these pieces together on varied levels. Liszt's "from the Transcendental Etudes" seems to go in opposite directions at once, the central theme a romantic melodrama worth of a silent movie of yesteryear. There are waves of notes that often get more dense at both the low and high end of the piano keyboard as the piece unfolds. Stockhausen's ever popular "Klavierstuck IX" is said to be re - imagined electronic music and is quite a different extreme - the essense of modern abstraction, long stretches of suspended silence, punctuated by flurries of activity. "The Celestial Railroad" by Ives has unexpected surprises, twists & turns, occasional quotes, playful & serious, a puzzle to ponder. The final selection is the oldest - Beethoven's "Sonata in A - flat" and is quite sad & beautiful, elegant, romantic and uplifting, a nice way to end this entire excursion."

After winning first prize in the Thelonious Monk Jazz Piano Competition in 1988, Ted Rosenthal recorded his debut as a leader for the obscure Ken Music label. The young man is joined by a heavyweight rhythm section consisting of Ron Carter and Billy Higgins. It's easy to understand why Rosenthal won the piano competition, as his interpretations of several Monk pieces demonstrate considerable creativity by a relatively young player. The trio tracks include a rollicking arrangement of Monk's "San Francisco Holiday," which incorporates a bit of Raymond Scott-like humor and Latin rhythm, along with a romp through "Rhythm-A-Ning." Rosenthal's solo feature is a richly textured treatment of Monk's "'Round Midnight" that is elegant without becoming mere cocktail piano. Trumpeter Tom Harrell added on several tracks, including a breezy setting of Monk's "Hackensack" and Rosenthal's driving post-bop vehicle "Straight Beyond," which crackles with the fire of Harrell's horn. Harrell is also present on Rosenthal's poignant, lonely waltz "Valse Désespérée," a haunting melody. Carter and Higgins provided outstanding support throughout the session. Ted Rosenthal's recording debut as a leader is well worth acquiring.

Clarity Recordings was an audiophile-quality record label based in San Francisco
that took pride in producing two-microphone, omni-directional recordings that are
said to provide a holographic stereo image.

Naturally Balanced Two Microphone Audiophile Recordings

The goal of this recording was capturing the musical performance as accurately as
possible. The sessions were recorded "Live to Two Track" utilizing only two spaced,
omnidirectional microphones to capture all of the instruments and vocals on these
recordings, the signals then were sent directly to the recording system.

Absolutely no signal processing of any kind was used in the recording or editing
process - no artificial reverberation, equalization, limiting or compression.
In order to achieve balances between instruments, the musicians were moved in
relation to the microphones. With this process, we were enable to create a natural
stereo image with all of the instrumental positions and levels achieved naturally.
The result is a recording that preserves correct phase relationships and presents
to the listener an almost holographic three-dimensional presentation of the musical
performance.

The microphones utilized have extremely wide dynamic range and very flat frequency
response. The recording electronics are custom modified and utilize premium connecting
cables and power cords. No limiting or compression of any kind was used during the
recording process. No mixing console was employed. The microphone signals were sent
directly to the recording system. Since we master our own recordings, we are able to
maintain the same high quality standards all the way from the original recordings to the
final master disc.

The result of this attention to quality at every stage of production is a recording of
extraordinary clarity and purity of tone with a remarkably lifelike quality of sound.

There is one adjective that surpasses all others when describing the sound of these
recordings — BIG ! The sound is big. The soundstage is very wide and deep.
The transients are quick and numerous. The extension at the frequency extremes are
impressive, without making the high-end too sharp or the low-end too loose.
As already stated, there is good preservation of the ambient cues of the recording venue.
The soundstage is wide and deep. Musicians are placed on the soundstage with pinpoint
accuracy, and their positions frequently extend well beyond the outer boundaries of the
speakers. Musical notes have a nice, smooth, lingering decay.


Resumed in few words: The incredible, truly lifelike quality offered by all CLARITY recordings
knows no acoustic rival! not even by todays high-rez standars! NO DVD! NO SACD! is able to
surpass the LIVE sound of these CDs!! To any audiophile with serious attemts to listen to
the ultimate quality recordings: if You are able to buy any of these rare gems, do not hesitate
to put Your hands on 'em, their all OUT OF PRINT and since the company even went out of
buisness since yeras they'll dissapear in oblivion forever in the next years!




° JEREMY COHEN ° A TASTE OF VIOLIN JAZZ

This fun set features violinist Jeremy Cohen mostly in the role of Joe Venuti, playing hot
traditional jazz and swing with a variety of personnel in small combos. Cohen swings hard,
has inventive ideas within the tradition, and performs such numbers as "After You've Gone",
"Humoresque," "Goin' Places," and "Honeysuckle Rose." Singer Maria Muldaur makes two
welcome appearances and the sidemen (mostly from the San Francisco Bay Area) fit into
the vintage music quite well. Worth searching for.

Violinist, leader and guiding light Jeremy Cohen, with assistance from pianist-arranger
Larry Dunlap and their friends, give the listener a grand sampling of old and new, familiar
and unfamiliar swing renditions which emphasize Cohen's violin prowess but - particularly
because of Dunlap's arrangements - also give plenty of space for bright solo (and duet)
improvisations by such bandsmen as saxist Jim Rothermel, drummer Colin Bailey, guitarists
Dix Bruce and Paul Mehling, vocalist Maria Muldaur and Dunlap himself.

Four of the numbers are closely associated with the first (and some say the greatest) jazz
violinist, Joe Venuti: "After You've Gone", "Humoresque", "Goin' Places" and "Doin' Things".
Two titles, "In a Sentimental Mood" and "Sophisticated Lady" are Duke Ellington classics
from the early 1930's; a couple more are jazz (and pop) standards from a bit earlier -
"Honeysuckle Rose" and "All Of Me".

Muldaur's featured vocals come on Dave Frishberg's "A Little Taste" (Frishberg lyrics over
an early bebop chart) and the relatively recent "If I Ever Do See You Again", by the great
songwriter Greg Brown. "In The Blue" and "Lover's Waltz" are by famed veteran violinist-
-composer Paul Nero who also wrote "The Hot Canary" and was a soloist on now-forgotten
NBC radio network shows of the 1940's, "The Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street"
and the "Carnation Contented Hour" - (Condensed Carnation milk, listeners were told,
came from contented cows").

"After You've Gone", a World War I pop tune, was one of four sides recorded by "Joe Venuti -
Eddie Lang and their orchestra" for Vocalion in 1931. This actually was a studio band that
included, besides Venuti and guitarist Lang, Benny Goodman, Jack Teagarden and others.
On this CD, Cohen's violin leads, taking the first theme at a slow, ballad tempo then (as is
almost always done on jazz versions) doubling the time and playing hot. Rothermel comes
in on soprano sax, Colin Bailey shifts to brushes and the two split fours for a chorus.

"A Little Taste" is a perfect vehicle for Muldaur, a marvelous, versatile and often overlooked
singer in the jazz-swing-cabaret style. With Rothermel on tenor sax, Paul Mehling (leader of
The Hot Club of San Francisco string-swing band) on guitar and Cohen often joining in,
Muldaur creates a mini-masterpiece. She produces a major masterpiece on her other number,
"If I Ever Do See You Again", a bluesy story-ballad in an eight bar pattern. Muldaur's voice here
has a plaintive, Lady Day-like fragility to it and Rothermel's tenor sax work is appropriate,
beautiful and breathtaking. Cohen and Dunlap contribute, but this is Muldaur's and Rothermel's
triumph.

I first heard "Humoresque" played by Venuti on Bing Crosby's "Kraft Music Hall" radio show
about 60 years ago. He took it straight - like a slow mazurka - the first time through, then
shifted to a 2/4 tempo (up) and as the show's band guffawed he clowned through a couple
of more choruses. Years later I saw Venuti play and realized why the studio audience was in
an uproar when he went double-time - when he shifted tempo, Venuti's habit was to turn his
fiddle upside down and play. As far as I know, Cohen's violin was played "proper" when this
recording was made.

Cohen's violin and Paul Mehling's guitar are properly sensuous and captivating in their rendition
of Ellington's "In a Sentimental Mood" - just the way Otto Hardwicke's soprano sax and the Duke's
piano were when the tune was first recorded. For "Sophisticated Lady", the group is expanded
into a quintet format with featured solos by Dunlap (in a very Dukish mood), arco bassist Jeff
Neighbor and Cohen, whose virtuoso violin interpretation Ellington would have loved, madly. Multi-
instrumentalist Ray Nance, playing violin, often took saxophonist Harry Carney's usual lead solo on
"Sophisticated Lady" with the Ellington band in the 1940's.

"Goin' Places" and "Doin' Things" were recorded by Venuti and Lang and issued back-to-back
on the OKeh label in 1927. "Goin' Places", typical Venuti, is a combination of Dixieland numbers
("Sensation", "That's a Plenty", "Buddy's Habits") played at a breakneck speed with stop-time
breaks, bass saxophone releases - Robert Young here, plays the role of Adrian Rollini in '27 -
and other spirited solos on this disc by Cohen and Mehling. "Doin' Things", in contrast, is at a
slow tempo and features a beautiful, recurrent melodic theme. Bruce's guitar work is especially
appealing and Dunlap's addition of some rich blues chords on the piano is a fine idea. Originally
"Doin' Things" had only the piano of Artie Shutt behind the violin and guitar.

Both "In The Blue" (1943) and "Lover's Waltz" (1950), by Nero, are - as might be expected -
feature numbers for Cohen's violin. "In The Blue", a 16-bar (double-eight) structure, has a
beautiful melody laid over a loping 6/8 rhythm - Mehling's guitar and Steve Strauss on bass
provide clean, effective accompaniment. "Lover's Waltz" (actually what was once called a
"hesitation" waltz) displays Cohen's, and Nero's, more romantic side, with a sweeping violin
melody over the Dunlap-Bruce-Bailey-Kerwin (bass) accompaniment.

"Honeysuckle Rose" and "All Of Me" both present Cohen's fiddle leading and soloing over a
rhythm quartet - piano, guitar, bass and drums. The feeling and the musical mood are strongly
reminiscent of violinist Stephane Grappelli's pre-war playing with the Quintet of the Hot Club of
France - or with his own various combos since 1950. That both these tunes were recorded in
the 1930s by the QHCF makes Cohen's handling of them even more interesting. Bruce's
arrangement of "Honeysuckle Rose" begins with a swing-rift intro then glides into the violin-led
quintet chorus, with the rhythm section swinging mightily. (It's hard not to swing on any Waller
tune). Piano, guitar (Mehling) and violin-bass solo choruses follow - Michael Burr's the bassist -
and the inimitable Bailey closes down the rendition with a magnificent series of drum-breaks,
played with brushes. "All Of Me" in Dunlap's short arrangement is played medium-up tempo
and features a full quintet ensemble with solos by Dunlap (one of his best on the disc) as well
as Cohen on violin and Jeff Neighbor on bass. - Phil Elwood

Paul Mehling - Paul is the founder and lead guitarist of The Hot Club of San Francisco, a group
dedicated to performing and recording the music known as "Gypsy Jazz". As a member of Dan
Hicks' "Acoustic Warriors", he has appeared at numerous venues around the U.S. The Hot Club
performs locally in the Bay area as well as internationally.

Jim Rothermel - Saxist Rothermel is a well-known and respected multi-instrumentalist, studio
recording artist, bandleader and arranger whose work can be heard on over 75 recordings.

Michael Burr - Originally a violinist, Michael Burr discovered a love for jazz in his mid-teens. He
studied classical bass and joined the San Francisco Symphony where he has played for the last
30 years. He is the principal bassist for the Symphony.

Jeff Neighbor - Jeff has played on numerous recordings including Joy of Cooking in the 70's and
Linda Ronstadt in the 80's. He has performed with Text Beneke, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Barney
Kessel, Kai Winding and Herb Ellis.

Steven Strauss - String bassist and arranger Strauss has played with the legendary Charles
Brown and his own string ensemble "The Parlor Cotillion". His arrangements are featured on CDs
by Penelope Huston and The Hot Club of San Francisco.

Robert Young - Jeremy Cohen first met Robert Young in Los Angeles while he was conductor and
musical director the "The Rhythm Kings", a twenties Paul Whiteman style band. His bass
saxophone style is an absolute delight on the selection "Goin' Places".

Though it’s been out for a while now, I’ve got to put Winston Ma’s River of Sorrow right at the top of this list as one of the most satisfying recordings that I’ve heard yet on SACD.
A collection of traditional and more modern works on traditional Chinese instruments; this recording startled and surprised me within seconds of my first audition. It is an extremely
moving work, with transcendent moments of joy, yearning, and tragedy ntermingled, leaping all barriers of language and culture.

The performances by Hui Fen MIN on the erhu, Wei LI on the guzheng, and Michelle LI on the yang qin are superlative; Ms. MIN’s work on the erhu is particularly arresting,
overflowing with powerful emotion. You can truly feel the tension that was in the air while she played — extraordinary!

What’s more, there were no tracks that I didn’t find satisfying, and that’s pretty rare for me.

All aspects of the recording itself are world-class, true audiophile reference grade (which is more rare than you would think). Timbre, tonality, dynamics, soundstaging, imaging,
presentation are all peerless. My congratulations to Winston, Jeff Mee (recording engineer), Paul Stubblebine (a truly superb mastering engineer!), Gus "the Great!"
Skinas of Sony DSD, and Ed "the Doctor of DSD!" Meitner—love those chipsets, Ed!
Not every SACD shows what the format can do… and some are far from it… but the production values evident in River of Sorrow show what DSD properly handled can do.

Quoting from my email to Winston, done shortly after my first listen:

"River of Sorrow is one of the most remarkable recordings that I have ever heard, Winston!! What a treasure!! Both Rick Gardner and I were absolutely (and deeply)
stunned by the magnificence of this DSD recording. The emotional power and artistic mastery is so evident, that we were left astounded at what we were experiencing!!

BRAVO! ENCORE! Let there be many more SACDs of this caliber from FIM!"

My response to this SACD has not dimmed over time, and I would echo the sentiments above. Friends, this is an absolute must-have SACD for those who love fine music, and
are open to sounds and works from other lands.

I am absolutely in love with this recording. Revered mastering maven Stan Ricker has called it a new standard in reference-quality choral music. Regular readers of Positive
Feedback know what I think of the CD version—it is the only CD that I have ever given a perfect score to. As good as the CD is, the SACD version is better. This disc is as good
a reason to run out and buy an SACD player as any I have encountered. I thank Winston Ma for releasing it, then having the good sense to also release it as an SACD. Bravo!

This recording of the Taby Church Chamber Choir was made in 1996 at the 13th-century Taby Church and the Osteraker Church, both in the region of Stockholm. It is a stunningly
natural and spacious recording of a choir of approximately thirty voices, male and female, aged 18 to 25. Individual voices can easily be picked out, the acoustic of the church is
reproduced in all its glory, and, when the church organ lets go, this recording really lets you know it. The overall effect is magical.

The human voice is very difficult to record correctly. It requires subtlety, delicacy, nuance, coherence, and neutrality, as well as dynamics, immediacy, and freedom from distortion.
This recording has all that in spades. There are 27 cuts, all with Christmas themes. There is excellent variety between solo female, solo male, and mixed voices. It’s tough to
pick out a favorite track (sorta like picking out my favorite Italian car), but "Sankta Lucia" remains a standout.

This SACD has my very highest recommendation! If you have the slightest interest in choral music, in classical music, or just in music, buy it.
You won’t be sorry. If you like playing Christmas music around the holidays, put this on continual repeat and go wrap presents. I predict that this disc won’t be far from my player
for a long time to come, and I just found the "Repeat" button on my SACD player’s remote control. Sound 10 - Performance 10 - Music 10
